“She’s the only one I’ve known to love helicopters. We made it easy for her to leave town.” The night in jail was still bugging her, but they all should’ve known better. After all the time spent watching the Caseys, maybe they were getting sloppy. Or desperate.

“Whoever it is will be visible when they land if they put down where the pilot is circling.”

She could hear the click of Joe’s camera, and she waited, as she could barely make out the helicopter over the trees. Once it landed, it would be out of her sight. “Think she’ll invite us in for wine and cheese and tell us where she’s been?”

“It’s more like she’ll invite us over to see if we can outrun the dogs. They’ve landed, and big Lou is out first. It looks like Katlin Patrick is waiting to drive them back, but there are plenty of her suits around too.”

The large number of men didn’t make sense. Cain, though, always had a reason for what seemed unreasonable. “If she’d turned that great brain to something like medical research, we’d have a cure for cancer by now,” she said softly. The areas she could see were still quiet.

“Did you say something?” Joe asked.

“No, talking to myself. Wait,” she said when a car drove up and parked behind her. A sliver of fear made her blink, but she saw Dylan getting out and walking toward her door. “Never mind. Is it her?”

“Yep,” Joe said, sounding as if he was on his speakerphone. “She’s being chivalrous and carrying Emma to the car. I wonder where she went?”

Dylan stood outside her door, waiting for her to put her window down, but the phone buzzed with another incoming call. “I guess we’re about to find out,” she said to Joe and put up a finger to Dylan. “Hello.”

“Hello, extra Special Agent Phillips,” Cain said sounding cheery. “How’s the grind on the highway?”

“Uncomfortable, but what choice do I have, considering you’re being so inhospitable?”

“If it was just you, I’d have invited you inside, but your new friends are a tad on the surly side.” There was laughter from the other end, but it was higher pitched than Cain’s, and Shelby figured it was Emma. “I thought I’d check in and tell you I took my wife out on a date night to Chicago. You say I’m inhospitable, but I just saved you hours of trying to figure out what I’ve been up to. Please make sure to report a good time was had by all.”

“Thank you, I appreciate that. Are you sure you didn’t meet with anyone?”
