  74. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  75. What’s next onyour reading list?

“What?” She always manages to say the last thing I’d expect. “I’m not using Brent.”

But she has me questioning myself now. Am I using him?

No. Brent and I have fun together. It’s simple and easy and there’s nothing wrong with that. This is just another way Saskia’s trying to get under my skin.

Her lips curve into a smile. “I’ve seen the way you look at my brother.”

“Sorry?” I check behind us to make sure nobody else is within hearing distance.

Saskia’s smile widens. It terrifies me that she can see through me like this. How can I beat her when she can read my mind?

CHAPTER 25

PRESENT DAY

Saskia smiles up at me from the lift pass.

Something—a draft or a tiny sound that only my subconscious registers—makes me look up. And there in the doorway is Curtis.

Fear flickers through me as he approaches. What’s he going to do to me? I hate myself for being scared, but being grabbed by Dale earlier made me realize:

1. How little I really know these guys.

2. That the normal rules don’t apply up here.

Curtis stops a foot away. He must be feeling all kinds of emotions—hurt that I searched his stuff, guilt that I discovered the lift pass, and panic that I’m onto him—but his expression is as unreadable as ever. Wordlessly he takes the pass from my hand. He stares at it. Flips it over. Looks up.

Shock, that’s what I see. And suspicion.

“Where did you get this?” he says.

“From your snowboard bag.”

He blinks. “Did you put it there?”

“What?” Of all the things I was expecting, it wasn’t that. A direct attack, straight off, so fast he hardly had time to plan it. “Of course not.”

Curtis looks back down at the pass, flexes it, holds it to the light at an angle. Smells it even. The photo is printed directly onto the plastic. He rubs a fingertip over her face. “It looks used, like it’s her actual pass from that winter.”

His acting skills are incredible, if that’s what he’s doing. He’s utterly convincing.

I take the pass from him. Here in my hand is one little piece of the puzzle of Saskia’s disappearance, but I have no idea what it means. According to the resort computer, there was no record of Saskia’s having used her pass on the day she went missing, so how come Brent and Heather saw her on the glacier? A glitch in the system, the police decided, but the presence of the pass now disproves that.

“If she’d gone up the mountain that day, she would have had this on her,” I say.

Curtis levels his jaw. “That’s just what I was thinking. So where’s it been all this time?”

“You’re saying it hasn’t been with you?”
