  74. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  75. What’s next onyour reading list?

“Yeah, that’s what I’m saying. Where did you find it exactly?”

“On top of your clothes.”

He folds his arms across his chest. “It wasn’t there this morning. Someone planted it. Between when I left my dorm and when I came in just now.”

I notice how he worded that. He isn’t prepared to let me off the hook just yet.

“It would have taken, what, five seconds?” he says.

“But why?”

“Blackmail, like I said last night.”

I want to believe him, but I’m just not sure.

The stony look in his eyes turns thoughtful. “Or maybe it’s a clue. Someone wants me to dig for answers.”

I cringe inwardly. There’s one particular thing I’d like to remain buried.

“Can I have it?” Curtis asks.

I hesitate. And tuck it into my jacket pocket. “I’m sorry. It has massive implications. I’ll have to tell the others.”

He nods, his face tight.

He’s offended that I don’t trust him.

“I searched Dale and Heather’s dorm as well,” I say, to show it’s not personal.

Curtis’s eyebrows go up. “Yeah? So have I. When did you do it?”

“Five minutes ago.” I’ll bring up Saskia’s credit card later. I want Brent there when I do because Curtis is going to flip. “What about you?”

“While you lot were eating breakfast.”

“Risky. Find anything?”

“Just a whole lot of hairspray.”

“Think Dale wears it as well now?” I say.

Curtis laughs and the mood lightens.

Until he says: “I searched your dorm, too.”

Pain lances through me. Now I know how he feels. “Fair enough.”

He pulls a silver-and-blue bracelet from his pocket and looks up at me.

I’m flushing. “What?”

“It’s Saskia’s.”

“I know. She gave it to me.”

He narrows his eyes. “When?”

I force myself to hold his gaze. “Back when we were friends.”

He studies me a moment, then hands it back. I don’t want it—didn’t even want it to begin with—but I stuff it in my pocket with the lift pass. I’ll throw it in the first crevasse I find. I only brought it to the reunion thinking he might like it as a memento of his sister, but the moment is lost now.

We head down the corridor.

“Any luck with the operator booth?” I ask.

“We got in, but we couldn’t get the bubble running. None of the buttons on the control panel are working. Either the power’s off or someone disabled it.”

“No radio?”

“No. But you could see where it was supposed to go. Someone had taken it.”

We find the others in the restaurant.

“Let’s search outside,” Dale says before I can mention the lift pass.

Curtis nods at Heather’s heeled boots. “Someone’s going to have to stay here with your wife.”
