- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- What’s next onyour reading list?
With his free hand, Brent lifts his cap off and places it on my head, the right way around. “I like you, Milla. Girls get all clingy with me usually, but you don’t.” His dark eyes study me like he’s trying to make sense of it. “You make me get clingy, which is fully weird.”
Saskia nudges Odette and they both look over at us. Why do I feel so uncomfortable? I like Brent. I love watching him in the pipe, rocketing into the air and hanging there with super-tweaked grabs. Knowing his incredible body will be mine to play with later.
And he’s the sweetest guy. He turned up on my doorstep this morning with a spare board for me to borrow. I didn’t like to tell him how my doorbell rang last night and I opened the door to find a Magic Pipemaster 157 leaning against the wall. I’d presumed it was from him, but I now suspect Curtis, even though he denied it.
Still, despite how great Brent is, I’m not up for a full-blown relationship. I force a smile and slip out from under his arm. I’ll have to talk to him about this, but not now, in front of everyone. “I’m going back up.”
“Go for it.” Brent flashes his dimples.
Glad he doesn’t seem to realize anything is wrong, I hand his cap back, stuff the rest of my baguette into my backpack, and glug from my water bottle. I’m craving another Smash, but I’m drinking way too much of the stuff. It provides a short-term energy boost, but it hangs about in my system and I’ve been struggling to sleep.
What I see when I lower my water amazes me. Saskia stands in Curtis’s arms with her face pressed into his chest. Is she upset? He lost it with her up on the glacier yesterday but he holds her tight now, murmuring something. What’s he saying to her?
Saskia nods and pulls away from him. As she heads toward me, I scrutinize her face. I’m not convinced she was truly upset. She was just playing him.
She picks up her board. “I’ll walk up with you, Milla.”
I try to think calm thoughts as she walks up the side of the pipe beside me. I need to blank her out and direct my anger into my riding. I’ll get my revenge when I smash her at the Brits.
“You’re not still mad about your snowboard, are you?” she says. “I told you it was an accident.”
Like hell it was. But I have no way of proving that.
She nudges my elbow. “So. You and Brent, hey? I thought so.”
“What about you and Julien?” I counter tersely.
“What about it?”
“Are you together?”
She laughs. “No. I’m just using him like you’re using Brent.” Her ponytail blows sideways, lashing me across the cheek.
