- About the Author
Whether exasperated by me or Anna’s comment, Kiera was done arguing, and she started shoving me toward the window. Glumly opening it, I stuck my head out to look around. Goddamn it. It was still lightly snowing, and there was fresh snow everywhere. I was going to freeze before I slipped and died. At least there was a trellis at the edge of this decorative roofline, and I didn’t have to try and dangle myself off the ledge and drop onto a bush to break my fall. Still. The trellis wasn’t screaming stability to me.
Looking back at Kiera, I tried again to reason with her. “You’re an adult, Kiera. He really would probably get over it quicker than you think.”
“He was going to have you sleep in a tent, Kellan…in the backyard.”
I started laughing…until I realized she wasn’t joking. Okay…seriously overprotective then. Her dad might actually toss me out of the house if he caught me in her room, and I really wanted to stay here, wrapped up in the warmth of Kiera’s family. “Fine,” I said, kissing her cheek. “But you owe me, big time.”
I pinched her butt before I left, and she giggled. Anna giggled too. Since I still might die, I saluted them a farewell before I ducked out the window. My feet instantly tingled with the cold as my socks soaked through. Damn it. Walking to the store with squishy feet was going to suck. Assuming I survived this of course. Careful of my footing, I stepped to the edge of the roof closest to the trellis. The top of the trellis was a little lower than the roof, so I had to squat down to reach it. And here is where I die.
I heard Kiera whisper, “Be careful,” and I looked up at her. She looked warm and cozy as she stuck her head out the window; I was already shivering.
Anna joined Kiera at the window, and I smirked at them. Lowering my voice, I told Kiera, “You’re lucky last night was completely worth this…” Even if I did die…still worth it.
Kiera’s cheeks flushed with color, and Anna let out an amused laugh. I moved a hand and foot over to the trellis before my toes and fingers froze up too much and this truly was impossible. To my great relief, the trellis held my weight. I started climbing down, but Kiera’s voice stopped me. “Kellan.”
When I looked back up at her, she grinned. “Pick up some eggnog too.”
Closing my eyes, I shook my head. Unbelievable. And yet, so adorable.
