Harley studied the phone resting on the coffee table beside a sequin purse. Mind if we take a look at your phone? Any messages Lisa might have sent could be crucial to our investigation.

Candy blinked, flustered. No, I'm not okay with that. You need a warrant, don't you? Am I a suspect now?

Callaway raised his hands in a calming gesture. Slow down, Candy. You're not under arrest. We just want to know what happened to Lisa. How did you two meet?

Candy gave Harley a hard stare before turning her attention to Callaway. In high school, she said. We just kind of clicked. Lisa was real quiet, but I could tell she had a lot on her mind. I got the feeling she wasn't happy.

Was she depressed? Harley asked. She knew Lisa hadnt tied herself up and thrown herself into that mine, but depressed people often became self-destructive, taking risks they would otherwise avoidand could prove easy prey to a predator.

No, not that I noticed. I think she was lonely. She didn't have a lot of friends. She talked about how much she liked to drawshe was great with colors. She fell silent.

Is there anything else you can tell us? Callaway asked. Anything at all?

Candy shook her head. She wasn't that open with me. I'm sorry. I know it's not much.

Harley, however, didnt buy it. She decided to try something new.

Did you know Lisa had a brother? she asked.

Candy snorted. Jake? What about him?

He had a lot to say about you when we talked with him. Didnt seem to like you much.

Candy shook her head with a humorless smile. Maybe not, but it didnt stop the little creep from staring at me all the time. Thats why I never stayed over.

Im sure it had nothing to do with the fact that Lisa lived in a trailer park, Harley thought.

Did you know he followed you? Harley asked.

Candy turned her head sharply. A look of panic crossed her face, then disappeared as she regained control.

So what? I have nothing to hide. Now if you have any more questions, I must insist I have a lawyer present.

That wont be necessary, Callaway said, glancing at Harley as if to say, Times up. Weve done all we can here.

Harley stared at Candy a few moments longer. She wanted to throw Candy in a dark room and question her until the truth finally came out. But any attempt to force the truth out of Candy now would probably only hinder their investigation, and the last thing she wanted to do was let a killer go free.

Callaway fished a business card from his pocket and handed it to Candy. If you think of anything, give me a call.

In the truck, Harley glanced over at Callaway, wondering if he had seen the same reaction she had. So? What do you think?

I think she's very upset.
