  47. About the Publisher

By the time I’ve finished explaining, Douglas is sitting stock-still, his mouth wide open. The train still hasn’t moved and now there’s only an hour until the ceremony.

‘I can’t believe you guys. That was the perfect moment to tell each other how you felt in Soph’s kitchen.’ Douglas threw his arms up in frustration.

I give him a look to say, are you serious?

‘I’m telling you,’ says Douglas, just a little too loudly for the carriage. ‘From what you’ve said, and knowing Joel, he was willing you to say something. Bloody hell. Why at no point over the last few days did you not think, oh hang on, I think he might still like me?’

‘Because he’s moving to the other side of the Atlantic with another woman who he’s getting married to.’

‘So what’s changed now?’

‘I realised that I’d regret it if I never told him how I felt. I guess I’ve been too scared to take risks and to let anyone get too close because I didn’t want to lose them, but with Dad’s recent health scare and how happy he is since being with his girlfriend Julie, it made me think about my own life and how I shouldn’t let fear stop me from going for what I want, for who I love. I mean, what’s the worst that could happen? He tells me he doesn’t feel the same way and he moves to Key West and I never have to see him again.’

‘I suppose,’ he says. ‘So how are you going to do it?’

‘I don’t know, I hadn’t planned any of this. One minute I was in my office and the next thing I’m on the train and then you were here and—’

‘OK, well, I want to make this happen more than anyone, so here’s how it’s going to go down,’ he says, resting his hands on the table and linking his fingers like he’s a super villain unveiling a plan. ‘I’ll arrive at the venue and lead Joel away to where you’ll be waiting so that you can both chat about things. That way there’s no big scene and no one except me and him will know what’s happening.’

‘Am I being the biggest bitch in the world doing this to him and Verity?’

‘If I’m being honest, I’ve always felt that Verity and Joel were together out of convenience. And there’s no denying that you and Joel have always had chemistry. You never know, you could be saving them from future heartbreak if they’re getting married for all the wrong reasons. Especially if Joel does have feelings for you. If you don’t tell them then potentially you’d be hurting all three of you in the long run.’
