Chapters (34)
As we waded around piles of smelly trash, I still couldn’t believe that Zeran was really here. Never in a million years did I think a darkbringer would turn against the Lord of Shadows, and he did it while defying his father, Commander Rovey. He had tried to rescue his little brother, Billu, who’d been taken to train with the most powerful darkbringers. Zeran had wanted to save him from that life, and so far, he’d failed. I watched as he disappeared behind one of the mounds of trash. I still had to talk to him about Tisha Thomas’s vision, but that would have to wait.
“I miss picking strawberries with my sister, Kimala.” Eleni’s wings fluttered nervously against her back. She always did that when she was thinking about her family. She swiped at her eyes. “I miss playing hide-and-seek in the forest with Genu. I miss my mom . . . I miss my old life.”
I squeezed her hand, and she shuddered. “I know it’s not the same, but I’m glad that we’re a family now.”
“I’m glad, too,” Eleni said, trying to sound brave.
As we walked around another pile of garbage, we heard a crash from up ahead. Eleni took flight, and I ran with my staff ready. I came to a stop when I saw Zeran sprawled on the ground with a foot planted on his chest. He was clawing at the leg of the person holding him down, but they only dug their boot further into his ribs.
My heart sped up as I raised my gaze and came eye to eye with one of my worst nightmares. Captain Nulan stood with her hands on her hips. It was hard not to see the resemblance between her and Eleni. They had the same golden-brown skin, curly hair, dimples, and iridescent wings. The Lord of Shadows couldn’t do most of his dirty work without people like her, people who carried out his orders. One of his most deadly cronies had come through the tear—one who had almost gotten the best of my friends and me multiple times.
“It feels good to be back on this side of the veil,” Captain Nulan said in a lazy drawl that sent ice down my spine. Then she turned her attention to Eleni and smiled. “Hello, my little nibling. Did you enjoy your nap?”
Before I could react, Eleni let out a soul-crushing scream and flew straight at her auntie. The same auntie who had betrayed her and her entire family. This was going to be epically bad.
