“I’m good with my fake wings,” I said. The harness fluttered excitedly against my back, and the wings lurched forward to pat me on top of my head. I guess we were on good terms again. “Stop messing around. We’ve got a tear to close.” I landed on the ground, and the harness turned back into a staff.

Zeran wrinkled his nose. “I don’t like this.”

“Well, we are in the middle of a garbage dump, but you’re right . . . something’s off,” I said as we picked our way through the towering piles of what had to be the worst-smelling trash on earth. I had to breathe through my mouth not to gag, but that barely helped.

“What I don’t get is how the Lord of Shadows is still able to tear the veil if he’s not using my power to do it.” Eleni hovered next to me, her wings propelling her forward. “There’s no way you could’ve damaged the veil that much.”

“Me?” I huffed. “As I recall, the Lord of Shadows used that power-stealing coffin—”

“You mean the amplifier,” Zeran interrupted.

“He used the amplifier to steal both of our powers to burn the veil,” I finished.

“True, but had you never come to the Dark, he wouldn’t have been able to do so much damage,” Eleni said calmly in her sweet voice.

“If I hadn’t come, you’d be asleep for another thousand years inside of that coffin . . .”

“Amplifier,” Zeran mumbled, and I glared at him.

Eleni broke into a broad smile that looked like bottled-up sunshine. “I’m so glad you came.”

“This is all touching, but we’ve got a tear to find, and the Johnston twins are expecting me home by six,” Zeran said. “Miss Ida is making a strawberry cheesecake for dessert, and I don’t plan on missing it.”

“Oh, was that why you were in such a hurry to leave sparring practice early?” I asked innocently. “Strawberry cheesecake, hmm?”

Zeran swiped his tail back and forth like he was swatting flies. “Are you always this nosy, or do you especially care about what I do in my spare time?” He wriggled his eyebrows at me, and I stumbled over a soggy paper bag.

I scoffed and waved my hand dismissively. “Don’t flatter yourself.”
