Chapters (34)
When Oya left, I had to take several deep breaths to get my head straight. Mama wrapped an arm around my shoulders as she, Papa, and Eleni joined me. We’d gone through a lot together, and I had the feeling that we would have many more adventures. I might not have been a guardian anymore, but the world would always need heroes.
Acknowledgments
I am truly grateful for the many years I spent living and dreaming in the fantastical world of Maya and the Rising Dark. When I set out to write this series, I wanted to make it a little dark and a little scary, but I also wanted to make sure the pages were full of hope, moments of joy, family, and friendship. The characters have made me laugh out loud, cry, and cheer, and have kept me up late into the night.
Maya has the support of her family, friends, and community throughout her adventure, and I am fortunate to have my own cast of characters who have supported me through this series. I’m always thankful to my mother, who encouraged my early love of books and storytelling. To my brothers, who never fail to remind me that one can love ghosts, superheroes, and science all at once.
To Cyril for your patience and support through the long writing days and nights, the joys and the ups and downs. Your dedication to your passion continues to inspire me to never give up on my dream.
To my little boy, I revised most of this book with you sleeping in my arms, which is likely how you learned how to type before you learned to crawl. I’m looking forward to the time when we can read the Maya series together.
To my literary agent, Suzie Townsend, thank you for your encouragement and support. You are a tireless advocate, and I am thankful to have you on my team. Thanks to Joanna Volpe, New Leaf Literary Agency’s fearless leader and mastermind. To Pouya Shahbazian, the best film agent in the known world. To Veronica Grijalva and Victoria Henderson for shopping Maya in the international markets. To Meredith Barnes for your wealth of advice and strategy. To Sophia, who helps to keep me organized. To Kendra, Hilary, Joe, Madhuri, Cassandra, and Kelsey, thank you for your support.
To my amazing editor, Emilia Rhodes at Clarion. I am thankful for your thoughtfulness, sharp eye, and support throughout the Maya series. I loved seeing your reactions to Maya’s antics. Thank you for giving me a platform to tell a fun adventure story centering Black kids that I never saw when I was growing up.
