Zeran and I stood back-to-back. “I’m not a godling,” he moaned.
“And I really resent being called a morsel,” Winston grumbled.
There was something vaguely satisfying in seeing something finally make Winston sweat. It served him right for always making fun of me and the other kids at JMS.
“These werehyenas are not half as scary as they pretend to be,” I said defiantly.
“I’m not so sure about that,” Frankie chimed in.
Just then, a loud growl echoed from the shadows. I held my breath until General—Ogun’s bloodhound—stepped forward with all six of his eyes focused on the werehyenas. Two pairs were on the alpha. General was a big dog, but he was half the size of the werehyenas, who quickly dropped to all fours to face him. General didn’t tuck his tail and run. Instead, he bared a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth.
I gulped. “This is about to get ugly.”
General leaped at the werehyenas. Soon the five of them were a tangle of fur and swiping claws. The alpha went for General’s neck, but the bloodhound threw his weight into the werehyena. General was fast, though not fast enough. The alpha’s teeth sank into his shoulder. General yelped in pain. We had to help him. I raised my staff, but just as I was about to let off a shot, the shadows closed around them and cut off all sounds of their fight.
“I told you that I would see you again soon, Maya” came a voice as smooth as silk, a voice that sent a chill through my whole body. For a moment, I couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t be here. Couldn’t be. But no amount of denying it would change the truth. I wasn’t dreaming, nor was I on the crossroads. This was real.
I slowly turned around, my back and legs stiff. The Lord of Shadows peered at me with glowing violet eyes before he let out a hoarse laugh that set ice in my veins and almost brought me to my knees.

TIME TO GO
I STOOD OPPOSITE THE Lord of Shadows, my heart racing, my palms sweating. My stomach felt as if I had swallowed a bag of rocks. I was rooted in place, frozen with fear. Had I really thought this day wouldn’t come—that he wouldn’t find a way through the veil? I had to pull myself together. This wasn’t over yet, not by a long shot. In fact, it had just begun. The light from my staff illuminated the bulk of the Lord of Shadows, but he wasn’t as I remembered. He was in some kind of husk with a cocoon of blackness swirling around him.
I shook my head in disbelief. “You can’t be here.”
