“Maya Janine Abeola!” Mama said as she stepped out of the house with Eleni on her heels. “You were supposed to be resting . . .” She abruptly stopped when she saw the darkbringers, but even they couldn’t keep her from scolding me. “You went back to the Dark? Of all the irresponsible things to do . . .”

“No, Mama,” I said quickly. “Zeran and I went to the bayou to rescue his brother and the other recruits from an adze named Black Mamba.” I gestured at Sidda. “This is Zeran’s mom, Sidda, by the way. She showed up after I put the first Black Mamba into a deep sleep, and the caretaker became the new Black Mamba.”

Sidda, who had been quiet until now, spoke up. “For what it’s worth, I’m grateful that your daughter helped save my son.” Billu leaned against his mom’s side, and she wrapped her arm around his shoulders. Zeran stood nearby with a big grin on his face. “I finally have both my boys back.”

Mama relaxed her shoulders and smiled at Sidda. “You’re safe here. As far as I know, there’s no adze named Black Mamba in our neighborhood.”

Sidda seemed to relax too. “I should hope not.”

“I will inform the celestials of your arrival,” Miss Ida said. “I’m sure they’ll have questions.”

Sidda nodded. “I will answer what I can.”

“Speaking of the celestials,” I said. “Tell them that the Lord of Shadows has recruited the adze and several other magical creatures to his side.”

“We know, Maya,” Miss Ida admitted. “We’ve been monitoring the situation, but there isn’t much we can do about it.”

Miss Lucille clapped her hands. She was in a better mood than her twin. “Sidda, you and the children can come with me. There is much we have to discuss, and I was just about to make dinner.”

“Or we could order pizza?” Zeran suggested.

Billu frowned up at his brother. “What’s pizza?”

Zeran slapped him on the back. “You’re in for a treat.”

“Let me get this straight,” Eleni said as I climbed the steps to our house. “There are two people named Black Mamba?”

I glanced over my shoulder and peered into the shadows beyond the front porch light. I could have sworn something slithered across the pavement. “It’s a long story.”
