I leaned against Papa. The backyard had gone silent without the roaring sound of the gateway, except for Lucky whining in the window next door. Poor thing. He looked like he wanted to get outside badly.
“I think it’s good if I keep practicing,” I said. “I still want to be better.”
“Of course—it’s important for you to understand the extent of your godling powers, but be careful,” Papa said. “I came out here this morning because I felt you opening a gateway beyond this galaxy.”
“Really?” I said in shock as I remembered the strange sensation and the whispers.
“There are some places that are too dangerous to visit, places of pure chaos,” explained Papa. “The Lord of Shadows may be a threat to this world and galaxy, but he is not the only one. Thankfully there is no way for the chaos to reach here as long as we do not let it in.”
I shuddered at the idea that there were things more dangerous than the Lord of Shadows, but I supposed that I should have guessed it. Mental note: be careful where I open my next gateway.
“Papa, Yemoja can’t really be serious about destroying the Dark,” I said. “That’s wrong on so many levels that I don’t know where to start.”
Papa took a beat too long to answer as he stared at the snow. “The councils across all the sanctuaries have been debating that option for the better part of a millennium,” he finally said. “Some believe that it is an acceptable loss to protect the rest of the universe.”
I swallowed hard. “What do you believe?”
Papa’s shoulders sank as he turned to me. “Two wrongs don’t make a right. Like you said, if we destroy the Dark world, then we’re no better than the Lord of Shadows.”
“We have to convince her to change her mind.”
“She seems to have taken your words to heart,” Papa said. “For now, she’s holding on the attack. She’s planning to discuss it at a meeting with all the councils tomorrow before proceeding.”
That was a relief for the time being, but not by much. We had enough to worry about without the celestials turning all dark side. Maybe if we could find out what the Lord of Shadows was planning, Yemoja and the other celestials could come up with another way to stop him before they decided to destroy the Dark.

WANT TO KNOW THE FUTURE?
BY THE TIME I got dressed for school, Eleni was on her second batch of waffles smothered in apple preserves. She and Papa had made the concoction last month, and it tasted better than apple pie. “There you are finally,” Eleni said, stuffing her mouth. “I’m surprised that you were up before me.”
I dropped into the chair across from her. “I’ll try not to make it a habit.”
