Chapters (34)
“But how long will that last?” Eli whispered next to me.
“Not long, I’m willing to bet,” I said quietly.
When the celestials were done reinforcing the barrier, Oshun shouted, losing her patience, “Get back to your classrooms now, godlings!”
I crossed my arms, still shaking from our encounter with the Lord of Shadows. Some of the other godlings started to file out of the hallway, but I wasn’t going to let Oshun intimidate me into leaving. I was a guardian, and any breaks through the veil were my territory. The rest of my friends stayed, too. “Where were you and the rest of the celestials? Maybe we could’ve stopped him.”
Oshun turned her cutting smile on me. “To answer your question, young guardian, we came as soon as we were done helping Elegguá. The Lord of Shadows almost broke through the veil in several places all at once, which wouldn’t have happened if you hadn’t convinced Yemoja not to destroy the Dark world.”
I was speechless. My friends were staring at me, and so were the few other godlings who were taking their sweet time leaving.
“The Lord of Shadows can do that?” Gail’s eyebrows shot up. “That would be cool if it were anyone else, I guess.”
Oshun frowned at Gail, looking puzzled.
“Not a godling,” Gail moaned.
“I can see that,” Oshun said. “Go to your classroom.”
“It sucks to always be on the sidelines.” Gail sighed, then stalked off.
“I’d gladly let you take my place,” Eli called after her. “Except I get to keep my ghosts.”
“Yeah, yeah,” she said before disappearing around a corner.
Nana looked up at the guardian mermaids, Pearl and Diamond, who were both shimmering with light all over now. “Yemoja would have waited for the others to arrive before attempting to destroy the Dark either way, and there was no guarantee that it would have worked. We always knew this day would come—it was inevitable. We couldn’t hold him back forever.”
“But we had a chance.” Oshun blinked back tears. “Now we don’t.”
I was numb inside, stunned by the news. Still, I couldn’t justify Yemoja and the other celestials destroying an entire world to rid themselves of the Lord of Shadows. But now the decision to wait had put all of us in grave danger. The Lord of Shadows had one foot in our world already, and it wouldn’t be long before he completely crossed the veil.
