  41. LET’S STAY IN TOUCH!

The beautiful, wooden rocking chair in the corner caught my eye. A giant, brown teddy bear with a peach bow smiled at me from the seat. I walked over to run my hand along the back of the chair. “That was my great-grandmother’s rocking chair,” Sam told me. “Several generations of Davis babies have been rocked to sleep in that chair.”

It was all so beautiful and overwhelming. I couldn’t believe that they had managed to transform this room in the amount of time that I had been gone.

“Well?” Court said, obviously dying to know what I thought.

“It’s perfect,” I answered simply, honestly. All three of them beamed at my praise. “How did you get all of this done?”

“We worked all night,” Court confessed, yawning even as she said the words. “Speaking of that, I’m going to go catch some z’s before I have to be at work.”

“Thank you so much. I love it.” I hugged her tightly.

“Love you too,” she muttered over her shoulder. None of the rest of us pointed out that I hadn’t said I loved her. She was obviously bone tired, and I did love her dearly, even if I hadn’t specifically said it right then.

Seth made a quick exit, soon after Court. He hugged me and said, “Later, Dude” to his twin before jogging down the stairs and letting himself out.

“So, this is why you shipped me away?” I tossed the question at Sam. He nodded somewhat sheepishly, so I continued, saying, “I guess if you had to keep a secret from me, this was a good one.”

“It’s really okay?” Sam seemed a little uncertain if I liked the room.

“It’s so far beyond anything I could have imagined,” I answered him honestly. “I love it. Peaches will feel so safe and loved here.”

He pulled me in for a sweet soft kiss, obviously relieved that I was pleased with their efforts. “I was worried that maybe we wouldn’t get it exactly how you would want it. We can still change anything you don’t like,” he offered.

I looked around. “I love it all.” The answer was the truth. The nursery was fantastic.

“I’m so glad.” His answer was filled with obvious relief as he wrapped me in his arms for a hug.

Only when my face was safely hidden from view, resting on his shoulder, did I allow my true feelings to surface. Tears burned the back of my throat as my face crumpled. This nursery, perfect as it was, provided proof that Sam had no intention of us being a family after the baby was born.
