He took the stairs two at a time, flung my door shut behind him, removed his jacket and shoes and plopped down on my bed in a matter of seconds. I was wearing his sweats that he had let me wear home after I spent the night at his house. That life-altering night seemed like an eternity ago now. I’d been wearing the sweats as jammies because they were super comfy, and they made me feel somehow closer to him.
Sam’s sweats were one of the few things I had that still fit my growing belly, but they were hardly sexy. He didn’t seem to mind as he grinned and held his arms open wide for me to snuggle into bed beside him. I gladly complied. Nestling the side of my face into his neck and shoulder, I relished the scent of him, drawing in deep breaths.
I felt safe, warm, and sleepy wrapped in his strong arms, his long fingers gently stroking my back. Perhaps I felt a little too safe, warm, and sleepy because I was surprised to open my eyes and see the first rays of morning sunlight streaming through my open curtains.
I had just spent the entire night sleeping with Sam Davis, and all we did was sleep. That had to be a first for him, and it made me feel special and important. I gently kissed his neck, making him stir in his slumber. He rolled my direction, pulling me closer to him.
“Abby.” He said my name on a deep breath, in that middle state between sleeping and waking. Hearing his semi-conscious brain say my name made my heart soar, and right then, I knew that somehow we would figure out how to make this work.

Sam and I spent the next several days together, except when we needed to go to work. We laughed, we talked, and we made love. It was a glorious, happy time, as long as I didn’t think about his big-time plans for my sleepy, little town.
I should have known that the protective cocoon that we had crafted for just the two of us couldn’t last. We were in my bed eating a not-so-healthy snack of corn chips and canned, squeeze cheese, when Sam said the words that burst our two-person bubble of isolation and pleasure. “So, I was thinking that maybe it is time for you to come with me to a family event. How about if you come to Sunday brunch with me this week?”
