It wasn’t long until Courtney burst into the store, her short blonde hair a spiky, but cute mess. “Today’s the day we find out who the Baby Daddy is, huh?”
I nodded to confirm before asking, “I thought you had to work the lunch shift today?”
“Are you kidding me?” She seemed almost offended. “I wouldn’t miss this for the world.” She smiled at me before turning to Annie, “Hey, why did the candy shop next door close?”
“I think they were bought out,” Annie responded, as I wondered how it was possible that I hadn’t noticed that when I came in. Miss Observant, I guess.
“Great,” I grouched. “I can finally have chocolate without any guilt and the candy shop closes.”
“I’m sure we can find you some chocolate, if you have a craving,” Annie reassured me, as Court and I turned towards the front door. Before we made it out of the shop, Annie urged us, “Please call me as soon as you are finished with the doctor. I’m going to be waiting on pens and pencils, and I want to hear every detail.”
Court and I grinned at each other over the odd writing utensil comment, but promised to call her as soon as we had any news. We left the shop arm-in-arm. Once we were outside, Court asked, “Do you suppose Annie meant that she’d be waiting on ‘pins and needles’?”
I shook my head and said, “Who knows. I’ve stopped trying to figure out her crazy sayings. I used to think she did it on purpose, but now I just don’t know.”
“One more quirk to love about her, I guess.” Court grinned, and I nodded in agreement. I was oddly happy, despite the butterflies fluttering in my stomach over the looming confirmation of my baby’s paternity.
We decided to walk to the medical office building, since it was such a pretty day. I needed to burn off some of this nervous energy anyway. I didn’t know what news to wish for. Either of the Davis twins would likely freak out at the knowledge that he would soon be a father, but it was time for the truth to come out. We all needed to know.

My hands were clammy, and I couldn’t stop fidgeting as I sat on the metal table in my lovely open-backed, paper gown waiting for the doctor to arrive. Court was pacing back and forth in the tiny space, obviously nervous as well.
“What’s taking her so long?” Court grouched, looking at the time on her phone again.
Suddenly, there was a quiet rap at the door. An older, distinguished gentleman in a white lab coat peeked in. “Abigail? I’m Dr. Ross.” He walked across the room and extended a hand for me to shake.
