Chapters (41)
“I miss you, too.” I typed the words quickly, but then backspaced to delete them before sending. I wanted Sam more than anything, but I didn’t know if this was a smart move. If I was with him again, I would never be able to let him go. I was confident that he was not a one-woman man. As much as I wanted to believe that I would be able to resist him if I found out that he had someone else on the side, I feared that I just wouldn’t have the strength. I did not want to be the long-suffering wife that he came home to only when he felt like it.
“If we are going to try to make this work, I have to be your only lover for the entire time that we are a couple.” I stared at the words trying to drum up the courage to send them. This could be the kiss of death that would keep me from having any kind of a relationship with Sam. It was the only way that I could maintain any self-respect, though. I gritted my teeth and pushed the Enter button.
The dots lit up, and I waited to see what his response would be. My leg was jiggling with nervous energy. “That’s a given, Abby. You are the only woman I want. I haven’t even been able to think about anyone else since being with you.”
I stared at his words, knowing that he wasn’t being honest. Was I going to doom myself to a life of constantly wondering if he was telling me the truth, or was I going to call him out on it? It wasn’t a difficult decision. “I know that you’re lying.”
“I’m not.” He quickly responded. “You’re the only one for me. I don’t want anyone else.” I stared at his words. I so wished that they could be true.
“Don’t lie to me.” I was angry that he was saying the words that I so desperately wanted to believe, when I knew that they couldn’t possibly be true. “I saw you with another woman at your house the day that I came to tell you that I had chosen you. You were wearing a towel around your hips and nothing else. Sound familiar?” The last words sounded a little snarky, but I was annoyed that he was acting like the perfect man when I knew that he wasn’t.
He was silent for a while. The dots weren’t blinking, so I knew that he wasn’t yet working on his response. He was probably trying to figure out a way to weasel out of this one. When his reply came, it wasn’t what I had been expecting. “You chose me?”
