Chapters (41)
It was all too much. My stomach had been churning all morning, and now it was in a full-blown upheaval. I had been too nervous to eat anything this morning, but something was about to happen. I covered my mouth with my hand. “I’m going to be sick.” The last thing I needed right now was to humiliate myself further by puking all over their fancy table. “Bathroom?” I frantically asked the one-word question of Seth.
He pointed down the hallway as he said, “It’s the last door on the left.” I ran out of the room without another thought.
I spent the next few minutes dry heaving and crying in the bathroom. Once I finally calmed down, I sat on the floor for a while, trying to collect myself. I couldn’t believe how Sam had just defended me in there. I wanted nothing more than to go find him and take him in my arms, but I knew that I couldn’t. Even if he decided that he could handle the news about Peanut, I would wonder if he was with another woman every time he was out of my sight.
It would make me crazy with jealousy. My mind knew that I couldn’t handle a relationship with Sam, even if he was willing to give it a try, but being in the same room with him just now had reconfirmed my overpowering feelings for him. I didn’t know if I would ever get to the point where I could be around him without wanting him with every fiber of my being.
I finally became rational enough to realize that I wasn’t going to figure it all out on the Davis’ bathroom floor. I just wanted to get out of there. I splashed some cool water on my face and looked at my blotchy reflection. I was a total mess, and I was beyond caring.
As I exited the bathroom, I heard Sutton Davis’ giant voice behind a closed door in the hallway, “…and I won’t let that girl ruin our plans.” I scurried past the door and was surprised to find Seth standing in the entryway waiting for me. I had assumed that Mr. Davis was yelling at Seth. It must have been Sam.
I looked into the dining room and found it empty of people, brunch apparently forgotten. “Can we get out of here, please?” I asked Seth.
“Your chariot awaits.” Seth clicked his heels together like a footman, making me smile despite this crazy situation. Once we were settled in his Jeep, Seth turned to me and said, “Well, that went much better than I expected.”
I openly gaped at him. “Good grief. What the hell were you expecting?” It was then that I realized he had been teasing me. It was just the comic relief we needed, and we both sat in his parked Jeep, cracking up.
