She rolled her eyes at him while simultaneously delivering the tray of drinks and flirting with her male customers. I shook my head just watching her. The woman really did have a talent for multitasking, and she moved like a graceful dancer. I was certain that I would dump a drink down someone’s back if I attempted the moves that she was currently making look easy.
Seth and I plopped down at the booth where Court and I always sat on Sunday evenings. “Do you think it really bothers her that I’m here? I can leave if she’s serious.” It was the first time I’d heard him be anything but confident and slightly cocky about his tit-for-tat banter with Court.
“She’s just teasing,” I reassured him. “If she really didn’t want you here, you would know it.”
“Yeah, I suppose that’s true.” He grinned at me before changing the subject. “I wish you’d gone to brunch with me today. I’m dying to tell my family about Peanut. They are going to be so excited.”
I silently hoped that he was right. I couldn’t imagine that there wouldn’t be major fallout from the announcement, though. “I guess we’ll find out in a week.” I said the words to Seth, silently wondering what Sam’s reaction would be.
My thoughts were interrupted as Court slid into the booth beside me. She yelled towards the bar at Joe as he hung up the telephone. “I’m finished for today. Now, whirl me up a margarita and bring me some tacos.” She beamed her beautiful smile at him to take the edge off her words.
Joe walked over to our table empty-handed. Court looked like she was about to make a comment about it, but then she noticed the serious look on his face and held her tongue. Joe ran a hand through his hair, seeming almost nervous. He was the most laid-back person I had ever met, and I wondered what could possibly be bothering him.
“I need to talk to you.” He said the words to Court. She looked at him, waiting for him to continue. “Alone.” He turned to go to the back of the restaurant. Worry was apparent on Court’s face as she gave me a wide-eyed, concerned look before following Joe. Something was obviously wrong.
It seemed like they were gone for an eternity. I was desperate to know what was going on, but had no choice except to sit there and wait. Seth tried to fill the void by making small talk, but I was not engaged. My mind was on Court and whatever news she was getting from Joe.
Finally, she emerged from the storeroom. Her face was an ashen mask of shock. I let her sit down before blurting out the question. “Court, what is it? What’s wrong?”
