Apparently, Seth had hit the nail on the head because Courtney squeezed her way onto the couch between Buster and me as she whined, “It’s been weeks, and he still hasn’t even tried to slide into second base.” I knew this was the longest Court had ever been with a man without sleeping with him, and it was evidently starting to bother her. “What is he waiting for?”
She had posed it as a rhetorical question, but Seth took it upon himself to answer anyway. “Maybe he’s just not that into you.”
She grabbed the throw pillow from under my elbow and tossed it at Seth. He easily caught it before saying, “Stealing a cushion from the pregnant lady? Nice. I should have known never to trust anything that bleeds for five days and doesn’t die.” I wondered how long he had been saving that barb to zing at her.
Court looked at me, trying to hide that she was about to erupt into giggles. She got control of her hysterics and then narrowed her eyes. I could tell that she had already formulated a plan to get even with Seth. She turned to him with an overly sweet smile and said, “That was a pretty good one, especially coming from someone who has two heads and only one brain.” Then in one quick move, she scooped up the pillow on the other side of me and bonked the side of his head with it.
He took the pillow and started to retaliate, but she clung to me screeching. “You can’t take the chance of hitting the pregnant lady.”
He responded in an oddly perfect Wicked Witch of the West cackling voice, “Very well. I’ll bide my time, but I’ll get you my pretty.” He waggled a menacing finger at her and Buster before adding, “And your lazy dog too.”
His strange talent had us both rolling with laughter. “I’m pretty sure the line from the movie isn’t about Toto being lazy,” Court said, her sour mood completely forgotten.
“I improvised a little,” Seth admitted. “Buster isn’t exactly ‘little’ as the witch refers to Toto.” We all looked lovingly at Buster’s squat body. Short, cute, droopy, and round were all words that came to mind when looking at Buster, but Seth was right, he was definitely not little.
“Uh oh, I have to pee again.” I was already getting up as I said the words.
“Again? You just went,” Seth complained, but he was already picking up the remote to pause the movie.
“Peanut’s sitting on my bladder,” I yelled the words over my shoulder on my way out of the living room.
