Chapters (41)
Perhaps I was about to find out the reasoning behind the tension between Seth and his father. Seth wasn’t elaborating, so I prompted him. “What do you mean by that?”
“My father’s a cheater, Abby. I caught him screwing another woman when I was a teenager. I lost all respect for him that awful day, and our relationship has never been the same since.” He paused before adding, “I couldn’t bring myself to tell Mother, though. She would be devastated.”
The pain was evident on his face. I could see that he was conflicted over his decision to keep his father’s transgressions a secret. I placed a comforting hand on his shoulder as he went on. “I hate it that I have to lie to her for him. She deserves better.” He turned to look at me before saying, “You deserve better too, Abby.”
I found myself staring at his gorgeous, green eyes. They were beautiful. He was beautiful, just like Sam. I mentally kicked myself for not choosing and sticking with this kinder, gentler Davis twin. I hadn’t even realized a tear was trickling down my cheek until Seth reached up to gently wipe it away. “Give me another chance, Ab. I won’t let you down. I came here to try to be the bigger man and encourage you to choose my brother, but if he has already moved on with someone else, he doesn’t deserve your heart, Abby.” He said the words softly, tenderly.
“I have more to tell you, and it’s going to freak you out,” I warned him.
“No, I’m here, and I’m not going anywhere. I shouldn’t have left when you said that you loved me. I’d give anything if I could go back in time and change how I reacted. I should have told you that I loved you too, and never let you go. We could have avoided this whole Sam mess, if I’d just shared my feelings with you from the beginning.”
I needed to say the words before I chickened out. I would have liked to prepare him more, but it was time for me to face the music. “I’m pregnant.”
The words hung in the air between us. I could tell that Seth was fighting to remain calm as thoughts were likely rushing through his mind. I decided to let that settle in a little before delivering the next bombshell.
Courtney chose that moment to deliver a tray with two glasses of strawberry lemonade and a plate of Chips Ahoy cookies. I smiled at her in thanks, but she could evidently sense the tension on the porch because she made a quick retreat back into the house.
“Is it mine?” Seth croaked the words.
