  41. LET’S STAY IN TOUCH!

My attention was diverted when Court said, “What is THAT?” She was wide-eyed, pointing at my engagement ring.

In all the bustle of excitement over naming Anna, we had failed to tell anyone that Sam and I were engaged. “Oh that,” I said holding up the ring and smiling mischievously. “Did I forget to mention that Sam and I are getting married?”

The room erupted then. Everyone was smiling, laughing, and congratulating us. Janice even hugged me, and said sincerely, “Welcome to the family, Abby.”

My sweet baby was passed around to every person in the room, and they each cooed over her like she was the greatest thing ever, which, of course, she was.

After a long while, the group started to disperse. Sutton and Janice said they expected our whole family to be at Sunday brunch from now on. Annie promised to come over to rock the baby any time I wanted her. Joe and Jessie decided to go pick up their kids at daycare and surprise them by going out for pizza.

My face physically hurt from smiling so much. I didn’t remember ever having been this happy. I wished that everyone could enjoy this kind of blissful, perfect moment.

As if the universe was working to make my wish come true, Seth reached over and took Courtney’s hand in his. They both looked down at their interlocked fingers, then he bent down and gave her a sweet, soft kiss on the lips.

She looked at him as if seeing him for the first time, before turning to me and saying simply, “Wow!”

Then she tugged him by the hand and said, “We’ll be going now. See you guys tomorrow.” Seth followed along behind her, like a happy, love-struck puppy.

As they were walking out, Court said to us over her shoulder, “I already know what I’m going to get you two for a wedding present.”

At our questioning gaze, she said, “A new ice bucket!” right before shutting the door behind her.

I looked at Sam, and I’m pretty sure the man was actually blushing. I would have never guessed that he was even capable of blushing. I had gotten so distracted with the crazy turmoil of our lives that I had never asked him about the incident when Court caught had him with his penis in our ice bucket.

“I should have known she wouldn’t keep quiet about that,” Sam growled the words in my ear.

I considered asking him about it, but decided it could wait. I didn’t want to mar this perfect day by making Sam talk about anything that might make him uncomfortable.

The three of us spent the night together in my hospital bed. I was holding my sweet, wonderful baby, and we were both cradled in Sam’s strong arms.
