  72. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

-I think so – I was only five or so when it happened but I remember it being on TV. She was so pretty. The girls at school tried to plait our hair in the braid like hers, I guess we didn’t know what it was she’d done.

-Convicted murderer chic! That’s really sick, Carly.

-We were seven! Anyway, maybe she didn’t do it. She got out on appeal after all.

-After five years. That’s a long time for something you didn’t do, at nineteen.

-I remember they said she might get the death penalty. I can’t believe they had that in California!

-They still do. Nuts!

-Really nuts. So, let’s talk about the murders. This story has everything. Child star kid – Madison. Now, this is going to sound harsh, but I didn’t realise it was possible for a five-year-old to have resting bitch face, but she really does. Did. Oops.

-She did! And that blue eyeshadow is so not her colour.

-Then we have the hot mom – shades of JonBenét Ramsay, Casey Anthony – we even have a Casey in this one too.

-Is there something there? Like some creepy guy saw Madison at a pageant, got obsessed with her?

-The police never found any evidence of that. There’s also the famous film-producer dad. Well, semi-famous.

-I found a picture of him with Brad Pitt, that’s famous enough for me!

-And the innocent British nanny – except she was no Mary Poppins, was she? You’ve seen the pics.

-See, I don’t think that’s totally fair, Em. If you went through either of our Facebooks, how many pictures would you find where we’re off our faces or have on tiny little tops? What about that Halloween you dressed up in your undies? She was nineteen, in a strange country. Plus, it’s America, people get murdered all the time there.

-OK. What about the mobile phone then? She had one, a Nokia like everyone did back then, but it was missing when the police came, never turned up. She said she’d lost it the day before the murders, but doesn’t that seem a bit suss to you?

-I dunno. She didn’t kill them with the phone, did she? Probably just coincidence.

-So you believe her that she just came home to find the door open, and they were dead?

-Nah. My money’s on the dad doing it. It’s always the dad, isn’t it? She was just lucky she wasn’t there or she’d be dead too, and the baby.

-Aw, the poor baby. How old would he be now?
