- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
‘I don’t know. I don’t know.’ It was what I’d always said, for twenty years. That I did not know what had happened to David and Abby and Madison. That they’d been dead when I stepped back into the house that day, bewildered as anyone, walking into a nightmare I couldn’t get out of. Innocent, hapless, unfortunate.
But that was a lie, and I felt it leave me as I realised I was finally going to admit it, the tension leaking out of my body. It was time to stop pretending. Because I did know what happened to them that day. I had always known.

OCTOBER 2000
The house was unbearable. So much tension I could hardly breathe. In the night I’d lain awake listening to David and Abby arguing downstairs. His voice a low rumble, hers manic. They were so loud Carson had woken up and I’d taken him into my bed, then we’d been joined by Madison, crying a little. Between the two of them, I’d been up for most of the night.
I gathered that David wasn’t happy that Abby had gone for the audition at Sony. ‘Give me a break, you’re far too old for the part. You’ll be lucky if you ever work again. And you’re fat, Abby, way too fat for the screen.’
Too fat, that was the phrase he used, when she had starved herself away to nothing. Abby screamed back that he was useless, washed up, that she’d checked the bank accounts and knew all the money was gone, his company bankrupt. Was that true? So he’d lied to me – he wasn’t making the YA film at all, as Abby had said?
‘You’ll never make a film ever again! You’re a failure, David!’
A glass smashed and I wondered what would happen now. Would they get a divorce? I guessed David would move out and Abby would need even more help with the kids. But could I stay here, if David was gone? Just me and Abby? We’d kill each other.
I gave up on sleep around six and got up with the baby. Madison had finally dropped off, so I carried her back to her own bed, glad of the peace. I arranged her pink pillow under her head, smoothed her golden hair over it. Poor little girl, none of this was her fault.
