Wanted to you know that the Captain has approved the rounds for protection on the top five people on that transplant list. Beyond that, we just dont have the manpower. The first shifts are rolling out in about an hour.
Yeah, I figured that would be the best wed be able to get, Stanhope said. Thanks, all the same.
Even though it was only five people, it was still a relief. While the killers motives were still little more than guesswork, Rachel knew the safest bet was that he was trying to get to the top of the list for some reason or another. And now that there was a chance that he knew what they were up to (assuming he had been called or contacted in some form by the police today), that seemed even more likely than before.
Getting out of the car in the officer and patrol lot, the agents and Stanhope parted ways. Stanhope seemed hopeful they would get their man which did Rachel a world of good. She knew it was probably just another effect of her recent troubles, but shed been easily discouraged as of late. To hear someone other than Jack trying to convince her all was well was a welcome treat.
Something like this in a city as compact as Roanoke…I think well find our guy by sunrise, he said. Ill keep a check on the patrols that are out to keep watch over the would-be victims. If you two need anything at all, dont hesitate to call.
With that said, Stanhope headed back into the precinct while Rachel and Jack made their way back over to their bureau car. Dusk wasnt on them yet, but it was making itself known in the fading light and cooler temperatures. Being closer to the mountains than Richmond, the Roanoke evening was cooler than Rachel had been expecting, reminding them that fall closer than they thought.
Before getting into the car, Rachel excused herself to the side of the parking lot where she took out her phone. She knew Paige would be at soccer practice, taken by the sitter, but she needed an update. It was started to wear on her, not being around them while there was so much uncertainty and tension in the air. But to get any sort of update, she was going to have to call Peter.
