The same Daniel Robinson that was arrested three years ago on an assault charge that involved an attempted stabbing?

Wish I was known for more than that, but yes. Officer, what the hell is this about?

Rachel stepped in, showing her badge as she looked in at the man. If he was indeed Daniel Robinson, he was sick. Which made sense, considering he was on a transplant list for a liver.

Mr. Robinson, Im Agent Rachel Gift with the FBI, and this is my partner, Agent Rivers. Weve recently learned that youre on a transplant list for a liver, correct?

Yeah. That a crime?

No, sir. We just need to know if

Listen, Robinson interrupted. You know about the liver, and youve already indicated that I look like shit. So, Im sure youll understand if I ask you to leave. With all due respect, I dont feel like wasting my time with the police.

He made a movement to shut the door but Rachel quickly put her foot in. She could tell by just the amount of force he put into it that he had no energy. He was sick and if he was this weakened by whatever his condition might be, she found it hard to believe that Daniel Robinson could be the killer. As she looked through the now-larger crack in the door at him, she saw that he was a sizable man, but he presented himself like someone that was about to fall over.

It did not escape her that this might be an act. Maybe hed thought quickly enough to put on this little charade after Stanhope had mentioned the transplant list. But you sure cant fake how old and tired he looks, she thought. No one is that good of an actor.

Sir, if we could just as you a few questions…

About what, exactly? Ive done my time for my crimes. And if Im being honest with you, I feel like Im still paying for it. I didnt believe in karma but…well, you know about my liver. You know Im on that list. You know…

Rachel hated herself a bit for what she was about to do, but she knew it was the most surefire way to ensure Robinson was not putting on an act. She made a very quick motion forward, as if she intended to push the door open and go inside. She made it to the doorway, her hand on the door, and watched as Robinson reacted.

He was slowalmost to the point that it looked like he was frozen in place. He took a few shuffling steps back and for a sickening moment, Rachel feared he might actually fall over. She could hear Stanhope behind her, apparently coming to the same conclusion she was.

Jesus, he whispered.

Mr. Robinson, Rachel said, are you actively seeing a doctor for your issues?

Check-ups only. Insurance isnt really cutting it much and I…I just…
