If our theory is right, yes, Rachel said. But it could have just been opportunistic. He may have simply known where Maria was going to be. This literally could be a target list and the order means nothing. Whenever he happens to come across a time and place where he can attack any of them, he takes it.
Stanhope scanned the list and chuckled. There are four names below Ramirez. Would it be a safe bet to say one of them might be the killer?
It would be logical, but not safe, Rachel said.
So what do you need from the PD?
I think anyone above Ramirez needs to be considered a potential target for the killer, Rachel said. They need to be protected…warned.
I agree, but we simply dont have that sort of manpower right now, Agent Gift. If we could weed the list down to make sure were hitting the most relevant people, that would be a huge help. And even then, this could turn out to be a shit-show. Telling this many people they may be the target for a killer is going to open up a flood of gossip of unimaginable proportions.
That might be a good thing, Jack pointed out. If we try protecting those people and it gets back to the killer, maybe it will discourage him.
Not to mention that right now, this is all we have, Rachel said. And if we want to prioritize, I think we focus on the top six names on the list.
I can get a few officers to call the people on the list but sending men out to routinely patrol them is a bit much to expect, Stanhope said.
I agree, Rachel said. It instantly brought to mind the policemen that were currently parked outside of her house, making sure none of Alex Lynchs cohorts would try anything else. First, maybe we can thin the list out by calling the doctors on the list. There are only five different doctors listed, so it wont take long. If we can rule out people based on whether they are currently hospitalized or in some other form of care, that will knock some of the names off.
And I can check the names against the database, Stanhope said. If any of them have criminal records, we flag them as the potential killer. He seemed anxious, like a bull wanting to surge out of the rodeo gates.
You good to orchestrate all of that? Rachel asked.
Im on it. Its a lot of work, but a lot easier than sending every unit we have out to check on upwards of twenty people.
Where can we set up? Rachel asked.
