Okay, Jack said, his tone even and calm. Now, you were the one that went out to confirm what shed seen, right? You were the first other than Mrs. Windham to see the body, right?
Yes, thats right.
Would you be able to tell us what you saw, exactly?
Eloise nodded grimly and straightened her back and shoulders up, as if in anticipation of the heaviness of what she was about to say. I went straight out to where Mrs. Windhams car was parked because thats where she said she saw the body. And thats exactly where he was. We found out later that his car was right beside hers. His body had fallen in front of the cars, right between them. Some of the blood was even on Mr. Webbers bumper. I mean, at the time, it looked like it was everywhere.
And what about you? Rachel said. We know Mrs. Windham claimed to have seen nothing out of the ordinary, but did you?
No, not a thing. I did see a single car coming in, but that was Mr. Torrence, coming in for a scheduled check-up. The cops talked to him, too, but it came to nothing. I mean, hes almost seventy and his daughter-in-law drives him to his appointments.
Between the time you saw the body and the cops arrived, did anyone else go outside anywhere near the body?
No. When we called the police, they told us not to. We did have one of the male nurses stand outside to sort of stop traffic from coming in. He even wouldnt let Mr. Torrence or his daughter-in-law come out of their car until the cops arrived.
It was the most information they were able to get out of anyone at Harbour. The only real point of interest was the overwhelming amount of blood on the scenefurther backing up the idea that Webber had been butchered at a much more brutal rate than Maria Ramirez.
With no clear direction from there, the most obvious place to head was the police station. Rachel supposed they could meet up with Deputy Stanhope and start looking into police records on the victims. Even this would likely be a wasted avenue, though; if Stanhope had mentioned nothing to them about records or prior charges from either of the victims, she assumed this had already been done and nothing had been found.
As Jack plugged the location of the precinct into his GPS, Rachels phone rang in her pocket.
When she took it out and found that it was an unlisted number, she nearly ignored it. She almost knew who it was, alerted by some lurking sixth sense. Right now? she thought. Are you serious?
She answered the call just before she was about to pull out of the Harbour parking lot. She wasnt ready to hear his voice, wasnt ready to feel the overwhelming weight of what a conversation with him might mean.
