Again, Im so sorry, Jack said, pocketing his ID. But if youll just let me explain…, he paused here, giving her the opportunity to interrupt again. When she did not, he continued. There have been a series of murders in the city over the past few days and the only link we can find between them is that everyone victim was on a transplant list for a liver.
What the hell? She looked terrified at such a notion, going so far as to actually grip the sheet around her a bit tighter.
Because your name is also on the list Im here to see if you would object to police protection around your home until we have the killer in custody.
You mean parked outside my house all day?
Yes maam. Not me personally, but a local Roanoke cop. And theyd only ever bother you or interrupt your day if they feel youre legitimately in danger.
She considered it for a moment, her eyes narrowing. I dont see the point. My son is usually here to watch after me. Although, he is a good for nothing slouch most of the time. So maybe we should have a cop sit outside.
Jack found it peculiar that shed talk about her son in such a way. It was apparent that someone was coming in to clean the place and take care of her. And from what he could tell, they were doing a very good job of it. If it was indeed her son, the guy should earn some sort of award for keeping the place so clean and putting up with this shit.
Do you have any help? he asked, trying to get clarification. Is your son the only help you have?
She seemed a little irritated by this question, letting out a deep sigh and rolling her eyes. Yeah, hes the best I can do. I know the house is nice, but all my money is gone, you see. I suppose he does try very hardas hard as he can, anywaybut its always a struggle with him. Hes far too lazy and has been for most of his damn life.
Slowly, little alarm bells started to ding inside of his head. The spotless house, the unappreciative mother that looked too weak to do anything on her own. There was something there for sure, but he couldnt quite make it fit.
So heres what well do, he said, trying to make her feel as comfortable as possible, given that a stranger had just come into her home. Ill go ahead and sit outside your house until a local policeman arrives. When your son shows up, we can also talk with him and get his thoughts on a police presence on the property.
