No. He said this with a cruel tension. It was evident that he could see where this line of questioning was headed and he wanted to cut it off at the knees. And before you make any accusations that would make you sound foolish and maybe even get you in some deep, heated water with your direct supervisor, let me tell you right now that I run a very tight ship. Any alleged calls to these men that came from here were for appointment purposes only.

Even when the calls are being somehow blocked?

Rachel was a bit surprised when Deringer took an offensive step toward them. For just a brief moment, she was pretty sure she saw an arrogant smirk touch the corners of his mouth. If youre here to accuse me of something, go ahead and do it.

Okay, Rachel said. What about Edwin Newkirk and Nick Harding? You have clients by those names?

Without pause, Deringer responded, You ever hear of doctor-patient confidentiality?

Jack met his one step, closing the distance between them even closer. I have. Have you heard of reasonable suspicion or probable cause?

This time, Deringers smile was a little plainer to see. I have. And this has been a pleasant chat, but youve already interfered with one of my clients today. Id appreciate it if youd get out of here and allow me to prepare for my next one.

Dr. Deringer, two of your clients have died, allegedly of their own doing, Rachel said. Doesnt that upset you?

Of course it does. It upsets me even more than two entitled FBI agents barging into my office and accusing me of…well, of what? I dont know. Because you havent been very clear on that. Now, if you want to accuse me of something or get access to my phone records, I suggest you go on and get a warrant.

Oh, if you need us to be clear, we can, Rachel said. She looked over to Jack and said, How clear should we be?

Dr. Deringer, Jack said, closing the distance between them and taking out his handcuffs. Youre under arrest for suspected involvement in the deaths of Edwin Newkirk, Joseph Staunton, Nick Harding, and Dustin Adams.

As Jack spun Dr. Deringer around to get his wrists, the therapist fought for just a bit. When Jack pulled his arm hard behind his back, Deringer let out a shout of pain and then stopped. When Jack turned him back around, Deringer was livid. If looks could kill, Rachel figured she and Jack would have dropped dead right then and there.

Im not sure why you look so upset, Rachel said. You asked us to be clear. And now you get to be clear with us from the comfort an interrogation room.
