Rachel took the lead and broke into a hurried walk. She knew that breaking into a run in a crowded street would do nothing but alert their man and give him reason to run away. As they advanced, the man became a bit clearer. He was of average build and height and was wearing a pair of jeans and a blue T-shirt with a brand logo on the front. She guessed him to be in his late thirties or early forties. He was also wearing a cap that covered his hair, making an accurate estimation difficult.

While they continued to close the gap between them, the suspect seemed to still be looking for a cab. In doing so, he spotted Rachel and Jack. Rachel tried to halt her progressto appear as if she was not in a big hurry to get to himbut hed seen her too quickly. She had just enough time to see a worried look cross his face before he took off. He ran back across the street, instantly drawing the ire of two drivers who blared their horns at him.

Shit! Rachel turned hard to the left, watching for traffic as she bounded out into the street. She held a hand out to ward off oncoming traffic, knowing it likely meant next to nothing in New York City. Still, she managed to get across the street safely, with Jack coming in behind her and blaring horns escorting them along.

The entire time, Rachel never took her eyes off of the suspect. He was fast, but his panic was causing him to run carelessly. He was bumping into pedestrians and kept looking back at them, slowing his progress. When he came to the end of the block, he turned left and continued down the sidewalk. When Rachel rounded that same corner, she saw that the sidewalk was a bit more open here. There was far less foot traffic, which allowed for the suspect to run faster.

But it also meant that Rachel could run faster as well. She kicked in an extra bit of speed, and at the same moment her body truly felt in tune and at its maximum performance, she recalled what had happened the last time she chased a suspect with this same kind of power. Shed been in pursuit of a protestor outside of a fertility clinic, just a few days after getting her terrible diagnosis from her doctor. During the chase, shed blacked out and spent the rest of the case dodging question from Jack.

Sir, you need to stop, she yelled. Were with the FBI! You run, it looks worse for you!

The comment put just enough hesitation in the mans step to make the chase much less competitive. As Rachel closed in on him, Jack caught up to her. Side by side, they closed in on the man and this time Jack gave it a try.

Were FBI agents! Sir, you need to stop right now!
