Jack did as she asked while they walked back to the elevator. As he spoke to his contact, Rachel kept her eye on the door to Apartment 401 but it was never answered. It did seem a little strange that according to Jacks bureau contact, the phones owner had been there half an hour ago and now, with the FBI coming to knock on his door, he was gone. She tried not to read too much into it, though, as Jack quickly updated the man on the other end of the phone.

Hes not here anymore, Jack said. Now that youve already tapped into the phone, how hard is it for you to get it back up?

Rachel hated only hearing one side of the conversation, but she also understood Jacks reasoning for not putting it on speaker. If there was someone in Apartment 401, standing by the door and listening to what might be going on outside in the hallway moments after she and Jack had knocked, a call on speaker mode would only heighten suspicion.

Okay, yeah, thats great, Jack said. Yes, were in the apartment building right now. After a few more seconds, Jack pushed the Down button on the elevator console. The doors opened right away. Getting on the elevator. Give me a second, would you?

Jack stepped into the elevator, Rachel following behind. Whats he saying? Rachel asked.

He says the phones owner has moved, but hes close by. No more than two blocks from what he can tell. But hes also saying that he can only get about a block or so accurate if the owner is not inside a building.

They took the elevator down and hurried outside. When they were back on the street, Jack got back on the phone. Okay. Were out. Which direction?

The man gave an answer and Jack motioned Rachel to follow him. He headed to the right, in the direction of a hot dog vendor and a busy intersection. As they walked quickly that way, Rachel was again shocked by the number of people that were filling the streets. If they could only get within a blocks accuracy, this was going to be a lot harder than theyd thought.

As she scanned the people on the streets, she also did her best to stay tuned in to Jacks conversation. How much farther? Then, after about twenty seconds of the other man speaking, Jack said, Are you kidding me? How in the hell are we supposed to…yeah, okay. Yeah, thats a good idea.

With that, he ended the call and though he continued to walk forward, it was clear that he did so with no clear direction.

What did he say? Rachel asked.

That were within a block of the guy. It could be any one of these people on the street.

Do we know for sure hed be out here?
