Yes, he took a few different medicines over the years. But those had been cut back, too, as he improved. The only one he still takes is Paxil.
Rachel noted that Mrs. Adams was still referring to her husband in the present tense. It was jarring because she knew that in about a years time, her own family would have to deal with this sort of thingthinking of her as a thing gone, a thing of the past that was no longer with them.
When was the last time you thought he might be slightly depressed? Rachel asked. Even if it was a small moment here or there?
Thats just it, she said, tears coming down the sides of her face as her voice took on a fragile little waver. He was happy. Hed been happy for the better part of a year. I just…I thought it was all behind him. No…I know it was all behind him. This isnt right. This cant be happening. Slowly, she started to lose control of herself then. She began to tremble and shake, looking to the four people in her living room with wide, pleading eyes. Its not really Dustin, is it? Are you sure? I mean…no, it cant be, right? Right?
A knock at the door interrupted her. Again the bearded man hurried to it. When he answered it, there were no introductions. All Rachel heard was a rushed Im her sister as a younger woman came rushing into the apartment. She so closely resembled Mrs. Adams that Rachel thought the two women might actually be twins. When Mrs. Adams saw her sister, she sprang from the couch and the women met in the center of the room.
Mrs. Adams wailed into her sisters shoulder. Rachel could actually feel the shrieking in her bones. She turned her head away from it and nodded to Jack, tilting her head and gesturing for him to join her out in the hallway.
They closed the door behind them, but the screams and cries of the newly widowed Mrs. Adams could still be heard clearly.
He saw a therapist, Rachel said. He was taking meds, he used to be in a bad place and struggled with depression, and then he seemed better. And now hes supposed to have jumped to his death. It feels far too much like the others.
Yeah, Id say so, too. I think its safe to say were definitely dealing with a killer here. But were still running blind. No leads, no clues, no witnesses.
