Thats a good point, Jack said. And if you want me to be honest, yeah, Im struggling with that, too. But you can have a look at the reports yourself. A potential second person on the scene, likely a pusher, on the third jumper. Family members of two of the jumpers shocked that their loved ones would actually take their lives. Its worth looking into.

And heres another thing, Rachel said. If we were to find that theres a fourth jumper tomorrow morning, I think it takes any hope of it all being coincidental out of it. And Id rather be safe than sorry. She regarded the room and could feel the stress of it all pressing in against her.

Without any warning at all, she felt herself growing dizzy. Her vision grew hazy for the briefest of moments. She did everything she could to lock her knees, to not even sway the slightest bit. Right now? she thought. Really? Right now? A faint pain stirred in her head like thunder and then faded away. The dizziness went away with it.

And another thing, she said, trying to get her focus back. The first victim was out in Cold Spring. So we dont even know if keeping the focus here in the city is going to be enough. Well need to be ready to respond to any calls that might come from outside your jurisdiction as well. Thanks for your cooperation, everyone.

Well, hold on, one of the officers said. Where do you want us to start?

I have no problem admitting that I dont know this city well, Rachel said. Ill leave it to you locals to figure out. If at any point you need assistance of any kind, Agent Rivers and I will be driving from checkpoint to checkpoint, so feel free to call.

The response was immediate. Shed never seen law enforcement respond so quickly. Officers were pairing off and instantly talking about the routes theyd take. The conference room was a flurry of activity and conversation with a game plan now in place. Now, the only thing left to do was get out on the field.

Rachel quickly found that driving between checkpoints was a task in and of itself. Driving around in one of the largest cities in the world and relying only on GPS made it difficult. She and Jack spent the first two hours of that night driving between numerous bridges, sometimes bypassing them and other times driving over them only to turn around and head back across in the opposite direction. She managed to make her way to Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge, Hells Gate Bridge, then over to Willis Avenue and Third Avenue Bridges. She stared to feel a little out of her depth, not having realized there were so many damned bridges in New York City.
