Yes, Jack said. Were looking into the deaths of three men that all look to be suicides. But the most recent one gives us some reason to think there might have been outside influences.
Rachel placed her phone on the table and turned it toward Lisa. These are phone records from each of the men. Each one shows that they each called the Better Days Prevention hotline within six hours of taking their lives. All of them jumped from a bridgea different bridge for each man.
Lisa, weve asked to speak to you, Shelby said, because the call logs indicate they each spoke with you. Not only that, but it seems they all spoke to you not too many days outside of the night they decided to take their own lives.
Lisa nodded, but her right hand slowly went to her face to cover her mouth. Oh my God, she said. I cant…I dont even know…
Lisa, Rachel said, do you recall speaking with anyone who indicated they were going to jump? Before Lisa could answer, Rachel tried to gauge her reaction. She was clearly troubled. That much was genuine. But as of right now, Rachel wasnt sure she bought into the level of shock she was showing.
Yes, Lisa said. She struggled to keep her voice level and soft. When she finally seemed to have some sort of control over it, it was a soft and reassuring voice that Rachel was certain would sound calming and gentle over a telephone line. Last night and then two nights before that.
And what about the one in between? His name was Nicholas Harding.
I remember him, sure. But he never got specific about how he planned to do it.
In each of the calls, do you feel you were able to talk the men down?
Yes, I did. I was…I mean, Shelby can get the calls for you, and you can hear them. The man last night even said how foolish he felt at the end of it all.
How long did you speak with them? Jack asked.
Shelby got to her feet before Lisa could answer. Let me go ahead and call the Boston office for approval. Hopefully I can have access to the calls within the next ten minutes or so. Please forgive me ahead of time if they need to speak with you.
She then left the room quickly, leaving Rachel and Jack to speak with Lisa. With Shelby gone, Lisa seemed even more fearful. She eyed the agent suspiciously and Rachel thought she might start crying at any moment.
Lisa, did either of the men truly frighten you when you spoke with them? Rachel asked. Did you think any of them would go through with it?
