Rachel realized that she also hadnt eaten anything since the little dry pastry the airline had provided. Thats not a bad idea, she said, reaching back out to snatch up her laptop.

They locked up the car and walked the block over to the pizzeria Jack had spotted. They were seated quickly and as they waited for their order to come out, they looked over the phone records.

So the first thing I noticed while trying to compare them all on my phone, Jack said, is that each of them had a series of calls from private numbers in the day or two leading up to their deaths. Of course, we cant tell from these records if the calls were from the same number or different numbers.

So we need to contact the cell providers and get someone else at the bureau on it. Rachel sighed as she said this. Shed been down that particular road before. Cell providers were often notoriously slow in getting information like that. Even if they called it in right now, it might be twenty-four to forty-eight hours before they got a result. Rather than get too disheartened by this, she pointed to the records. And look, those calls all come between nine and midnight.

On her laptop screen, she had three windows open, each window showing one of the victims records. Lined up in such a way, it was easy to make the comparisons. It also made it quite easy for Rachel to see another similarity in the recordsone she felt might be even more pivotal than the calls from the private numbers.

See this eight hundred number? she asked, pointing first to Joseph Stauntons number. She then trailed her finger to the second victims records, forty-nine year-old Nicholas Harding. The eight hundred number was there, too.

Yeah, and theyre both outgoing.

Rachel then scanned Edwin Newkirks records and saw the same number. And the most interesting thing of all was that all three men had called the same eight hundred number on the night theyd allegedly decided to take their own lives.

Rachel took out her phone and instantly started tapping in the number. It rang three times before it was answered by a soft female voice.

Better Days Prevention Hotline, New York. This is Samantha. Who am I talking to?

This is Special Agent Rachel Gift with the FBI. You said prevention. Is this a suicide prevention hotline?

Samantha sounded very confused when she said, Yes maam. And youre FBI?

I am. And I need to speak to your supervisor, please.

Um, sure, yeah. One second. Hold please.
