I do. I can text it to you, if you like. Its just the name of the group and the woman that heads it up.
Thats a good place to start, I suppose.
What about the other families? Jack asked. Have you had the chance to speak with the families of the other two jumpers?
Ive spoken with the wife of the first jumper on the phone, but very briefly. Shes open to meeting, but I honestly havent gotten to her yet.
Can we take that from you, then? Rachel asked.
Absolutely. It was my understanding you guys would be taking this off of my hands, anyway. Im happy to pitch in, but I already have a new homicide case on my desk when I get back to the station.
Thats fine, Rachel said. Well run it, if youll just send anything you have aside from the police and coroners reports weve already seen.
Sounds good. I can have it all to you within the hour. For now, I can get you started on the family of the first victim. Its about a twenty-minute ride away from here, in Manhattan. Ill call ahead to let them know youre coming.
It was a relief to Rachel. In fact, it felt like a head start. And as they parted waysBranson heading for his car while Rachel and Jack took up their rentalRachel tried to think of a man hiding his depression from his wife. Yes, Hannah had been aware of Edwins depression, but surely he hadnt told her everything. It made her think what Edwin may have been hiding. She felt it was a stretch to just assume a suicidal man might have been hiding secrets, but then again…she knew quite a bit about hiding dark, secret things.

The first jumper had been forty-two-year-old Joseph Staunton. The police report told the very simple story of his death, that he jumped from the Manhattan Bridge, likely from the north subway tracks on the lower deck. His body had been found in the water, but the state of his body suggested that he struck the ground just shy of the river on the Manhattan side. No one saw him jump, but his body was discovered by an NYPD officer on routine patrol, just happening to catch a glimpse of Stauntons orange shirt bobbing in the water.
