There were a series of numbers on the pad, five in all. And four had been scratched out. Not only were they phone numbers, but Rachel even recognized two of them because shed been staring at them constantly for the past two days: Edwin Newkirk and Joseph Staunton.
It all seemed lazy and sloppy to have it all out on the coffee table like this. But with the speed she was taking lives, Rachel supposed Lisa didnt have time to properly clean up after her morbid arts and crafts sessions.
Jack, have a look…
She handed him the pad, but saw that hed also found something. The sections that had been cut from the paper had found a new home in what appeared to be a large notebookthe sort where the paper had no lines and it looked like a blend of sketchpad and portfolio. Rather than take the pad with the numbers on it from her, he held out the notebook, which hed already opened.
She looked to the ages and saw a picture of Nicholas Harding staring out at her. In the grainy picture, he was smiling. The small headline belied that expression, though: Local Man, 44, Jumps to Death. Beside it, the name of the bridge hed jumped from had been scrawled down in long, elegant strokes.
She reached out and turned the pages as Jack still held the book. The final page she came to contained an article on Dustin Adams. This one had been printed from a website. It contained a picture of the High Bridge, the bridge hed allegedly jumped from.
Theres a fifth number here, Rachel said, shaking the pad in her hand. I think its safe to say that not only is Lisa the killer, but this number could very well be the fifth victim she has in mind.
Yeah, Id say thats a safe play, Jack said. He still looked a little frazzled over her kicking in the door, but he was slowly coming around. He tossed the notebook back onto its place on the couch and stood anxiously beside Rachel as she pulled out her cell phone and dialed the fifth number on the pad. She placed it on speaker mode so Jack could also hear.
