And yours, Rachel said. Branson, I know its inconvenient, but were going to need the same set-up we had last night. I need as many as you can send out to every bridge you can think of.

Im already setting all of that up on my end, but I can tell you right now that were not going to get the same manpower he had last night. Half the people in this station think Deringer is the guyits just a matter of finding the smoking gun. And the ones who matter, including my captain, are the main ones who are buying that line of thought. It also doesnt help that despite so many officers being committed to it last night, we still ended up with Victim Number Four.

Yeah, I figured that was going to happen, Rachel said, not bothering to hide the irritation in her voice. She did understand the train of thought behind this approach but wasnt ready to put all her chips on Deringer just yet. She wondered what the reaction to that specific train of thought would be tomorrow morning if there was a Victim Number Five.

Ill keep you posted on happenings around here, and the first groups will head out to keep an eye on bridges in the next hour or so.

They ended the call as Rachel looked out into the night, the Brooklyn Bridge standing out against the natural dark. The fact that there were twenty-one bridges just in Manhattan was mind-bogglingand they already knew their killer wasnt working specifically in the Manhattan area. She knew there were roughly two thousand bridges and tunnels in all of New York City combined, and bridges with any considerable height that might be a fitting site for a suicide numbered in the high five hundreds. In other words, even if the NYPD threw dozens more units at this case, they were still basically looking for a needle in a haystack.

She also couldnt help but wonder if the one remaining blocked number they could not get access to might be the needle. And if so, if it was going to end up sticking them in a deadly fashion.

If a fifth person dies tonight, this is going to become a media circus, she said, really just thinking out loud. And I dont even want to know how Anderson would react.

So what could we possibly be missing? Jack asked, slapping at the papers in his lap.
