“You okay?”
“Fine. Yeah.”
I was anything but, and based on the tightening in his jaw, the way he worked it side to side, he knew.
“That why you been crying?”
My feet froze to his wood floor, and my hand stalled almost to my wineglass. “What?”
“Your eyes are red, and I’m not an idiot.”
No, he definitely wasn’t. I grabbed my wineglass and took a sip. It was warm, making me flinch as it slid down my throat. “Emotional overload. I think it’s allowed after the week I had, isn’t it?”
“Of course it is. Doesn’t mean I like being the guy who caused it.”
“You weren’t.” It was my family and my own failings that threw me into a tailspin. I shook my head. Tomorrow. I’d deal with it tomorrow.
I dumped out my wine and refilled my glass. At a minimum, I’d need a job to pay for all the wine of his I was drinking. The thought made me smile as I brought the glass to my lips. “Can we not talk about this anymore? I’m exhausted and—”
“Intruder Alert! Intruder Alert!”
An alarm blasted, followed by a loud screech.
I jumped, wine sloshed over the edge of the glass and over my fingers.
Kane laughed and stood. “It’s all right. It’s Alix. I have the code set to go off whenever he comes over uninvited.” He turned toward the entryway. “Which is way too damn often!”
A blond man, tall, lean and probably chiseled on every inch of his muscles appeared in the doorway. Wearing a forest green polo shirt, collar popped, and most likely professionally pressed khaki shorts, he sauntered into the room like he owned the place and went straight to the fridge. “You never call. You never write or invite me. I missed you.”
His accent was light, but noticeable.
And I was standing there, in the ugliest and loosest clothes I owned while these two species of male perfection laughed.
“I saw you two hours ago, asshole.” Kane shoved the man out of the way and slammed the fridge door shut.
Fortunately, the man had good reflexes because his hand slid out of the fridge, fresh beer in his fist, right before the door slammed. “I cannot play if you break my hand.”
“You can’t play if I break your face, either. What are you doing here?”
He turned to me then. Smiled. A smile that could easily turn women’s brains into scrambled eggs. “I wanted to see our new roommate.”
Our?
I looked to Kane.
He sighed. Heavily. Annoyed but playful. “Alix, this is Emmersyn. Emmersyn, this is my teammate and former best friend, Alix Halvrick.”
“You are beautiful,” Alix said, his eyes scanning my body.
My own narrowed. Liar. At least, not in what I was wearing now.
He swung his head toward Kane. “And before you hit me, you told me I couldn’t flirt with her. You did not say I couldn’t be honest.”
Kane sighed and shook his head like he was giving up.
