So comfortable. Not sexy, but Spanx must have helped design the line because it hid my side handles that usually rested right above my hips, sucked in my stomach, almost fully flattening it. I could still breathe, though. Move easily.
“Maybe I won’t return any of these,” I muttered and hurried back to the pile to dig through and find the rest of them.
Seven of them. One for every day of the week. All different colors.
“Oh yeah.”
Too bad I didn’t have a phone to send a picture to Heather. She’d roll her eyes and laugh, but a dress that was comfortable on me? Made me feel good, and didn’t make me feel like I was having to hold my breath to hide my thick stomach?
Absolute perfection.
I was hanging all of them in the closet when a heavy thump echoed through the townhome, followed quickly by Kane’s voice bellowing below.
“Emmersyn, you here? I got an annoying little pain in the ass on the phone for you!”
That could only mean Heather. “Coming!”
I left the rest of the clothes I hadn’t put away yet on the bed. A pile of swimsuits. Dresses. Skirts. Shorts. The man didn’t know my style, but he did good even if I wasn’t entirely comfortable with keeping everything.
I’d pay him back, though, every cent, as soon as I could get it out of my joint account with Lincoln and move the rest of my finances to someone else other than Lincoln’s dad’s friend.
That was a conversation that was going to be lovely.
By the time I was downstairs, Kane had Heather on his laptop FaceTime, and her smile turned huge as I stepped into view behind him.
“Ooohhh… cute dress.”
If it was just Heather and me, I’d do a little shimmy shake for her approval but considering Kane was gaping at me, mouth open and his dark brows high on his forehead, I didn’t.
“Oh. Um. Thanks… both of you.” I glanced at Kane. “Even if it was all a little over the top.”
“It’s all good.” He smiled easily. “How was your day?”
“Relaxing.” I brushed at the sides of my dress and leaned over the counter so I could see Heather better. “You shouldn’t have helped him, you know.”
“You’ll pay me back. No worries.” She flipped her hand in the air like the thousands of dollars meant nothing, although considering she made good money and Kane was probably loaded, too, it wasn’t to them.
Kane turned, grabbed something out of the fridge and while his back was turned, Heather whispered, “Did you ask?”
I shook my head.
“Ask me what?”
Great. The man had supernatural hearing.
“Heather—” Damn it. I’d told her I needed more time. I didn’t know this man. I glanced back at Kane. “Nothing. Nothing at all.”
He returned to the counter, standing behind me and off to the side, and settled a hand on the countertop. “Liars. What is it?”
