“You’re welcome. And while you’re shopping, buy some things to go out, not just lounge around here. My teammates like to get together quite a bit at the beginning of the season. I’ll take you with if you want to go. Maybe you can meet some women to hang with while I’m on the road.”
What the hell was I saying?
I couldn’t take it back now. The very picture of Emmersyn in a summer dress, showing off her curves, made the suggestion ridiculous. Same with hanging out with my team.
Their wives.
Hell, they’d fall on Emmersyn and suck her into their crew faster than vultures fall on prey and then never remove their claws from her.
“That is, if you think you’ll be here longer than a couple weeks. If you need to get back to work…”
“I don’t.” She shifted the laptop and pushed her lips to one side.
“No?”
“I do a lot of volunteer work.”
She didn’t have to work? I was missing something to this saga, and something big.
Too damn bad I’d pressed her enough today and didn’t have the time now to ask why. “That’s nothing to be embarrassed about, Emmersyn. There are a lot of women who choose not to work.”
“I’m not embarrassed.”
Sure she wasn’t.
But whatever. Again. She wasn’t my problem to fix or a puzzle to solve. She was someone to help. I needed someone to clobber me over the head with that, though, so I’d remember.
“I’d say call if you need anything while I’m out, but…”
“I’ll be fine.” She smiled. “And if we could get a phone tomorrow, that’d be good. I’m okay for today, though.”
“Good. Right. I’ll get going. Keys to the car are on the counter—”
“I won’t take it. At least not today.”
“Oh, just so you know, in case there are any deliveries or anything, the security guards at the gate have to call it in. They’ll buzz here first before calling me, and that’s by the front door where the security system is.”
“Thanks for the heads up.”
He scanned his living area and kitchen. “Anything else you need?”
Because I was now making this weird. I really needed to get going.
“I’m fine, Kane. Truly. You can leave and not worry about me. I’ll probably take a nap, watch some TV, maybe go for a walk.”
“I know. It’s… well, it’s been a while since I’ve left a woman in my home. Feels strange, I guess.”
Understatement.
“I promise I won’t burn it down.”
Another smile. Goddamn, this woman. She had a healthy amount of sass in her for a woman who’d been through enough. Still, I laughed.
“Make sure you don’t. Oh, and I was planning on ordering groceries tonight when I get back. If there’s anything you need, feel free to head to the grocery store link and add your own. It’s saved under my favorites. I’ll finish it when I get back.”
“Oh. That’d be great. Thanks.”
