PART I
Ludo
Bryony
Perfidy
For the blood-drenched kingdom of Finfalla, the Blood Tide has always been an extinction event, a time of cleansing, of rebirth. The cycle has continued for thousands of years, as predictable as the tides or the rising of the sun. Even with the goddess Narcissi as their ally, those armies of mortals have never tasted the glory of victory.

Ludo
Lostwood, near Dunmire, Finfalla
“This way. We’re almost there,” Dagr said, shoving through the thick forest tangle with a certainty that belied the utter lack of any sort of a path or trail to follow. The lion-man’s turquoise fur was shrouded in shadow, his face turned away as he spoke. His voice was deep, resonant, making Ludo wonder whether the creature had once commanded armies. He seemed to exude strength from every pore, not the least of which was the way in which he hefted Cainan’s charred and smoking form across his shoulders without ever stumbling or wavering.
Ludo fought to keep up, determination coursing through him as he cradled Bryony’s feverish form against his chest. Truth be told, he was already on the wrong side of exhausted. With each successive step forward, his muscles screamed for him to stop, to rest from his toils, to catch his breath. Ever since they’d departed Comman Dur, Lostwood seemed intent on stifling their escape. He swore, at times, that the trees themselves moved into his path as he blinked, forcing him to weave a drunken path through the undergrowth. Thorns slashed across his arms and face, but he barely felt their pricks of pain, and before he was aware of the blood welling up from his skin, the punctures had already healed. It didn’t help that he only had one eye to locate hazards in his peripheral vision before they seemed to leap out at him from the darkness.
Or it all could’ve just been in his head, a product of the chaotic events that had transpired at the abandoned prison.
Regardless, sheer will and the need to protect this woman drove him onward, for buried somewhere inside him was an instinct that something bad would happen if Bryony remained in the forest much longer. He didn’t know if she would die or not, but he wasn’t willing to take the chance.
Not with her. Not when he’d left so many things unsaid before she’d lost consciousness. There were things he needed her to understand, things he needed to explain.
