- PART I
Perfidy looked closer, eyeing the same mushroom from which she’d broken the small bit off in order to revive Cainan. “Is that whut they’re called? Yer right, they do look like tears, don’ they? Sorry about that. It broke when I was diggin’ it up and then I lost it in the dirt.”
“As this was your first offense, I suppose I can let it slide. I am not unmerciful, after all. You have paid your penance. I trust I won’t need to issue further punishments for bad behavior?”
Perfidy’s mind immediately went to Cainan, but she blinked his image away. “Course not, ma’am. I’ve been fully an’ one hunnerd percent rehabilytated from my ways o’ mischief.”
The woman looked at her skeptically, while simultaneously secreting the handful of ’shrooms into a pocket in her dress. “We shall see about that. Now I must be off. There is healing tea to be brewed.”
Perfidy released her pent-up breath slowly from her lungs, and then turned to find the others gawking at her. “Whut?” she said.
Interlude: Of Man and Monster
North of Dragon’s Breath Lake, Lostwood, Finfalla
Orum Saltlog had long lived apart from the rest of the citizens of Finfalla, choosing a life of peace and solitude over the busyness that plagued the realm’s major cities. The town he’d grown up in, Dunmire, had once been but the tiniest dot on the map (if it was on any map at all) that could’ve been mistaken for a speck of dust to be wiped away. But over the years, the ambitions of those who resided amongst Dunmire’s shacks and farmhouses had turned it into a thriving city that soon filled with the usual rabble and ilk that seemed to swarm like cockroaches to anything with paved streets rather than dirt roads, stone buildings rather than thatch huts. Those determined men and women who enacted these changes, waved off the rise in crime as a necessary evil associated with the need for the ever-turning wheels of progress to continue their endless spiral.
In Orum’s opinion, progress was just a fancy word for the destruction of all that is good, the wheel crushing civility and peace under its ceaseless path forward.
This, of course, is why he left Dunmire many seasons ago, just before the autumn harvest, which had once been something the entire town had celebrated, coming together for a full week of merrymaking and feasting. It was said that half the children of Dunmire were conceived during the Harvest Festival, when ale flowed freely and love, in turn, was offered without fear of rejection or whatever tragedies the future may hold.
