  53. PART I

This time, she didn’t cry out as she pressed him to her breast and he bit her. She endured the pain, refusing to look away from those eyes that refused to look away from her.

For the rest of his life, she would give him everything she had.

Unknown to the queen or the king, another event had transpired on this fateful night. For while the Nightdawn had brought life and opportunity to some, it had brought death and fear to others. The small, coastal village of Last Dawn was burning.

Bryony

Marchessault, Finfalla

Twenty Years Later

Gaining an audience with the king had been no easy task, but at long last, his legions of gatekeepers had acquiesced, though they weren’t shy about voicing their discomfort with Bryony’s vague description for the purpose of her visit.

“Be quick, concise, and respectful,” one of his sycophants hissed as he hurried along to keep up with her long, purposeful strides. It had taken her years of practice, but now even the most discerning eye could no longer detect a limp in her gait. “And for gods sakes, bow!”

With that final warning uttered, the wiry man peeled away with a sweep of his finery and took his place off to one side, while Bryony soldiered forward to the designated spot for petitioners such as her to occupy: a dark stone set amongst the field of beautifully carved white stones, an homage to the brave northern explorers who’d left Sky Peak centuries ago to make their home in these lands.

King Artemus Vedran, First of His Name, stared down at her with nothing short of the disgust typically reserved for smelly things stuck to one’s shoe. He was draped in lavish, brightly colored robes that hung from his broad-shouldered frame like a second skin about to be shed. An iron chain dangled from his neck, inlaid with a ruby the size of a child’s fist that was probably worth more than most of his subjects’ houses. His head was fitted with a silver crown graced with the Finfallian crest, a powerful tree representing the goddess Narcissi, surrounded by four other emblems that, when connected, formed a diamond. The Sculptor’s hand. The Scribe’s quill. The Forger’s hammer. And the Warrior’s sword. The symbols of each of the Five Gods. Each was polished to a gleaming shine.
