Now that was something Perfidy thought she might be able to get behind. “Ye’re sayin’ I can…channel…godsblood?” Miss Marin nodded. “Then I have jest one question, fer starters at least.”

“I’ll answer with as much honesty as I can.”

Perfidy thought that was a strange way of saying yes, but she didn’t question it. “Whut’s godsblood?” she asked.

Miss Marin smiled, and this time it was genuine. “Let me show you.”

Ludo

The Oathlands, Finfalla

Ludo was concerned about Bryony. Regardless of who she was, and the fact that her mission was at odds with his own, he hated seeing her like this. It was like she was numb. The cold wind blew its icy breath and she didn’t shiver. She stubbed her toe on a rock and she didn’t curse it nor kick it out of her way like she normally would. It was like she was walking through a cloying fog, just hoping it would all be over soon.

No, he thought. It’s more like she is the fog.

“You alright?” he asked.

A glance darted his way before returning forward. “Of course. Why wouldn’t I be? And don’t start up again about my nightmare, sleepwalking thing from Slough.”

“So long as you don’t start up about my experiences in The Blind Pig.” The strange tavern continued to weigh upon his mind. How he’d been trapped inside with no way out, only to awaken to Bryony’s screams to find the door right where it should be, unlocked and ready for him to open.

“Oh, you mean how we’re lost in a maze of hills trying to find a legendary city called Oath that may or may not exist, just like its inhabitants, the Daughters of Ereniel, may or may not exist, all because you happened to have supper and too much to drink at a suspicious establishment with a magical door that gave you a vision of a goddess and her offspring? Are those the experiences in The Blind Pig that you don’t want to talk about?”

“Yes.”

“Then I curtainly won’t talk about any of that.” She grinned evilly, which made him regret disclosing so much about what had happened to him while in Slough. Still, the mischievous expression she now wore was a void of a lot better than the thin line her lips had been pulled into a moment before. “Seriously though, there’d better be a damn good reason for this little side quest. Every step we take in the wrong direction could take my—the Fire Eater—further away.”

He pretended not to notice her slip. “That would be bad because we both want to kill him.”

“Why are you stating the obvious?”
