  53. PART I

She stabbed her fingernails harder into the right side of the demon’s neck, hoping to steer it in the desired direction. Instead, that only caused it to go berserk, twisting one way, then the other, as it tried to dislodge her from its back. Still, whether by design or dumb luck, it veered toward the peninsula of stone.

Bryony almost threw herself free of the creature’s back too early but managed to cling to her precarious position a few seconds longer before bucking her body like an angry bull. It wasn’t graceful. It wasn’t pretty. But it got the job done, her flailing form landing shoulder first on the unforgiving floor, sending shivers through her body.

She rolled over, dismembered and bleeding but somehow not dead. She expected the wraiths to come for her again, but they didn’t, their screeches fading into the ether, leaving her alone with her pounding heart and ragged breaths.

“Come on,” Aria said. “It’s time for you to leave.”

Perfidy

New Dawn, Lostwood, Finfalla

Perfidy met each set of eyes as she entered the circle of huts behind Miss Marin. Aliza watched her without flinching, while Clemmy nodded in her direction. The dwarf Gruff ignored her entirely, while Julio mon-whatever-the-rut-his-name-was smiled even bigger than he’d smiled the last time, if that was possible. The boy with no name also known as Mirac met her eyes with disdain and a hearty dose of suspicion. On the other hand, Jereb seemed to watch her with too much interest, like her very presence had made getting out of bed this morning well worth his while.

Miss Marin stopped and scanned each of those who had gathered, seeming to consider them. “Jereb, please introduce Miss Perfidy Tress to Lady Brenner so she can get settled, and then I’d like you to give her a tour of New Dawn, starting with our godsblood source.”

“I thought ye were gunna show me around,” Perfidy said quickly, not at all liking how Jereb practically bounded forward like a hound upon hearing his name called.

“Alas, I have other business to attend to. I’m afraid I will be absent for the next week or so, most unfortunate timing as it turns out. I prefer to be on hand for a new novice’s orientation into New Dawn’s fold.”

“I’m no novice an’ I’ll steer clear of ye all’s fold fer now. Jest ’ere to see whut’s whut.”
