Thus, there were no witnesses to what happened next. No one saw the shadow darkening the swathe of moonslight, nor the whisper of unfurling wings. No one spotted the gleam of fangs in the dark.
There was no one to hear their screams either.
Nor was there anything to identify their remains the next morning, only charred bits of bone and a tidy pile of teeth.

The role of the Protectors is as the last line of defense against those who would harm Narcissi. For that reason, they must always be on their guard, prepared for whatever is to come. The Guardians, on the other hand, are the scouts, seeking out evil and cutting it from the world before it can take root. Finally, the Sightless are those great and powerful souls who commune with the Goddess Herself, speak with Her Voice, and see with Her Eyes. They are Her agents in all things, and for this reason must be worshipped as though they are gods themselves.

He stared at his hands as though they belonged to a stranger. The skin was smooth and unblemished save for the rust-colored bloodstains. He wiggled them a bit, letting the sunlight dance along each finger.
“Why did I do it?” he said aloud.
Shadowy memories assailed him. He’d heard the men arguing about meaningless nonsense. Had seen the moment their argument spilled over into their pathetic form of barbaric violence. Something deep inside him—a voice, shouting through the void—had told him to just walk away from the scene, and yet now he understood that he was never going to do that. And why should he? Would anyone remember the lives of those two idiots in ten years, a hundred? What were their names again? Lom and Gorrison. He couldn’t help but scoff. For when his name was whispered by fearful mouths in the shadows centuries from now, theirs wouldn’t even be a footnote in the annals of history. Void, he’d done the world a favor by snuffing them out before they contaminated the world with their idiocy.
His vision blurred, self-hatred drawing moisture to his eyes.
The familiar voice sounded, as it always did at his lowest moments, but this time he didn’t listen—didn’t want to listen. Right now, he just wanted to feel alone and miserable. Right now, he just wanted to wallow in regret. Surprisingly, the voice retreated, as though even it understood such needs, had once succumbed to them itself.
“Why am I like this?” he said aloud, a question whose answer might’ve been buried a million miles away.
