  53. PART I

The lord blinked, an amused look creeping onto his face. “What do you think he will do? Let the beast eat him as it almost ate you? He’ll kill the bastard, of course.”

Orum felt the sudden urge to flee this house of horrors and death, but he knew he couldn’t before he confirmed the information he needed to know. “The Orian woman who sent the letter…you said her name was Gwendolyn Storm, right?”

“Can you believe that name? I bet she’s a rare and beautiful creature to behold. Perhaps I’ll send my Huntsman her way after he’s done with this dragon of yours.”

The vileness of this cretin of a man roiled in Orum’s stomach, but he soldiered on with his inquiries. “And she’s from the eastern part of the Four Kingdoms, correct?”

“Yes, she’s from Ferria, within the bounds of Ironwood.”

“And did she offer a description of her dragon?”

“Of course she did, something about two heads and scales the color of blood. A spiked tail. She described her as sinewy and full of grace, I believe. How ridiculous is that? Is she describing a deadly monster or a dancer? But what does any of this have to do with leading my man to the dragon?”

The description didn’t match the dragon he’d seen, which had just the single head and was built like the boulders that it flung from its maw—sturdy and thick. Still, Orum felt emboldened. “It has nothing to do with that, because I won’t be leading your Huntsman anywhere. And if he does happen to stumble upon the dragon, I hope he ends up being the beast’s dinner.” With that, Orum Saltlog turned on his heel, strode to the door, thrust it open, and found the shortest path to the exit, ignoring the dead stares of the dozens of dead creatures that watched him as he passed by.

Eventually, Lord Olmstead’s futile protests faded into the background and then disappeared completely. And he took great pleasure ignoring Mister Cleaves’ inquiries as he shot through the door and out into the night.

The next thing he needed to do was procure some fresh parchment, a quill, and some ink. He had a letter to write. A letter to a certain Gwendolyn Storm of Ferria. The Orian woman who was hunting for her dragon. Surely she would know what to do, even if he’d have to tell a few pointed lies to persuade her to pay him a visit.

He had no choice, right? The dragon had changed his life, had shown him the woman he loved and reminded him that he still had a lot of life worth living. It was only right that he repaid the favor.
